In recognition of the National Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday 27th January, Hillside Primary’s Key Stage 2 classes have been learning about the holocaust and how we can prevent such tragic genocides happening again. In remembrance of all genocides including the holocaust, each class has created a unique way of recognising those who have lost their lives: Year 3 created a ‘hill of shoes’ with words of peace written on them inspired by the shoes taken from Jews in concentration camps; year 4 created candles which reflect Anne Frank’s message that even in the most terrible of circumstances, hope still remains; year 5 created arm patches replicating those worn by the Jews in Nazi occupied Germany; and, as a symbol of peace, year 6 created mobiles with hanging doves, on which were written the names of some people who died in the holocaust. The morning assembly was followed by a minute silence, in which we remembered those that have died in all genocides across the world.
