Year Four Science

Year Four have been observing the processes of melting and evaporation this afternoon,  as they watched solids (ice cubes) change to a liquid, and then heated it to change it to water vapour. We then linked our observations to the processes of the water cycle.

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

This week we have been reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. In the story Mrs  Grinling made some disgusting sandwiches to scare the seagulls away from Mr Grinling’s Lunch. We made our own disgusting lunches using the things that we found in the woods.  We then made a zip wire, like in the story to send […]

Hillside’s Science Ambassadors

Reception, Year One and Year Two children were given a super science experience by some of our newly appointed Science Ambassadors from Year Six. They demonstrated how to observe over time when watching the dissolving effect of skittles in water. There were lots of predictions made and scientific language used during the observations. Our Science […]

Mystery boxes in Year Four

We are exploring some mystery boxes in science this afternoon. We are using our previous knowledge of materials and shapes of objects to try to predict what is inside each box and giving detailed reasons and explanations for our predictions.

Year Two grow like plants!

During their dance lesson, Year Two imitated the growth of a plant. They thought about which part of their bodies represented each part of the plant and slowly showed the growth over 25 days. Brilliant work!

Handa’s Surprise

This week Reception have been reading Handa’s Surprise. They have been learning about all different kinds of fruits and today made a fruit salad with all of their favourites. We also talked about healthy and treat foods. Ask your children to give you some examples at home.

Great Grounds Workshop

Reception, Year 1 and a Year 2 have been lucky enough to receive a visit from James and Mike from Great Grounds! They are arborists who shared a range of safety equipment before demonstrating some extremely noisy chainsaws! The children loved watching the wood chipper, despite the wayward sawdust that was created! They were then […]

Year Five trip to the National Space Centre

Yesterday, Year Five went on their trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester. Despite the very long coach journey, we had an excellent day! In the morning, we all completed a workshop which saw us investigate how rovers are programmed to work on Mars. Not only were we applying our science learning, we were […]

Year Four Sound Investigation

Finally, a sunny afternoon meant that Year Four have been able to carry out their sound investigation. We have used decibel metres on the iPads to measure the changes in the volume of a sound as you move further from the source. Our maths skills have been put to good use too when measuring the […]

Nursery’s Learning this Week

Nursery have read the story ‘Lost and Found’ this week by Oliver Jeffers. We’ve spent the week exploring tuff trays containing different textures, creating penguin themed artwork and learning about blubber! We investigated the difference between placing our hand onto an ice pack and having a layer of ‘blubber’ (lard!) between our hands and the […]
