Welcome to our Year Six class page! We are the oldest in the school and so we have lots of responsibility! We know Year Six is going to be an exciting year and we are also ready for the challenge as well. We can’t wait to prove what we can do!
The staff:
Our teachers are Mr Frost and Mr Bell and we are supported by Mrs Davies and Mrs Machin. Mr Frost enjoys art and maths – he even leads these subjects and therefore teaches them really well. He is also hot on with growth-mindset, which means he makes sure we are working hard, persevering and putting in 100% effort. Some children go to Mr Bell for maths and English, which is great because we learn in a smaller group to help us learn. Mrs Davies and Mrs Machin support us lots too, taking us out for interventions to help us remember our learning. They all work really well as a team and we can go to any of them if we have any issues, need a helping hand or even just a chat.
School Trips:
Because we learn about the Victorians and World War Two as our main topics, our visits often relate to these. We are looking forward to trips such as Stanley Head, Blist’s Hill Victorian Village and Alton Towers. Mr Grey usually visits us as well to talk about his experiences of being a child in World War Two. The trips and visit are definitely the things the majority of us are most looking forward to in Year Six!
Topics:
We enjoy learning about the Victorians in Year Six and their impact on Britain. We will be learning about the industrial revolution, the British Empire, the Workhouses, Victorian schools, and even some of the Victorian jobs, which we are told were terrible. As mentioned before, we will also be learning about World War Two, in particular the impact it has had on our local area- Stoke-on-Trent. We will learn about the Battle of Britain and also the events leading up to war.
The dreaded SATs take place in Year Six and we will be working extremely hard to ensure we are as prepared as we possibly can be leading up to this. Our teachers will be working hard to, providing extra booster sessions to make sure we are ready!
Authors of the Term:
Our authors of the term link with our topics of that term. The first author we study is Charles Dickens, who wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Oliver Twist’, and ‘Little Dorrit’. This study links with our Victorian topic. John Boyne is our other author of the term, who we study alongside our ‘World War Two’ topic. He wrote ‘The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas’. Most of us have never read these stories so it will be interesting to learn about these historical eras through them.
Teams:
We sit in tables of four whilst in class. These are called our KAGAN groups. They allow us to support each other and share our ideas. We work hard and uphold the best behaviour and attitudes to learning so that we can gain marble points for our table. These are then counted up at the end of the week by our ‘marble counters’. The winning table get to sit on cushions for the following week. The table which gets the most marble points at the end of the term gets extra break too!
Jobs:
Because we are the oldest and most responsible in the school, we have been given job roles. Everyone has a role in Year Six. Of course, there is a Head Boy and a Head Girl. There are also other roles, such as DJs, playground leaders, sports leaders, register monitors, librarians, dinner monitors and eco-monitors role. At the beginning of the year we all filled out an application form for the different jobs that we wanted to do. Year Six also have a Rock-band, which rehearse with Mr Hall, a football team, who train with Mr Mellor and Mr Schonau and a Tag Rugby team!
There are so many clubs offered at Hillside and there are so many interests that are catered for. Art club, computing club, choir, history club and computing club are just a few that we could take part in!
Thank you for taking the time to read our class page, we hope that you have a bit of a snapshot now of what it is like in our amazing class.
